Septic tank repair usually starts with something you can see or smell. The toilet gurgles, the tub drains slowly, the yard smells or a wet spot shows up over the tank. Jojo Septic repairs septic tanks and septic systems in Lake Worth Beach and across four South Florida counties. We look at the job and put the quote in writing before any work starts.
A septic system has two main parts, the tank and the drain field. Trouble in either one can back sewage up into the house. Sometimes the tank is just full, and septic tank pumping is the job. When the drain field itself has failed, the work moves to drain field repair.
Tell us about the septic problem and where you are. We will look at the job and put the quote in writing.
Florida's septic rule counts a system as failing when sewage escapes onto the ground or into the water. It also counts a system as failing when wastewater can no longer leave the house properly. Either way, the system needs repair.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) lists the signs to watch for. Inside, drains run slowly and the pipes gurgle. Sewage may back up into the toilets and tubs. Outside, a sewage smell or damp spots show up near the tank or drain field.
Grass over the drain field can also turn bright green and spongy, even in dry weather. If you see any of these signs, call or text (561) 239-5838 and tell us what is going on.
Wastewater leaves the house through one main pipe into the septic tank. EPA notes that a T-shaped outlet helps keep sludge and scum in the tank and out of the drain field. That outlet piece is often called a tee or a baffle. When it breaks off, solids can ride out and clog the field.
Septic tank repair covers each part along that path. A line from the house can crack, and a tank lid can break. Roots can grow into the distribution box or the drain lines and clog them. EPA advises planting trees the right distance from the drain field to keep roots out.
The drain field spreads water from the tank into the soil. EPA says a field overloaded with too much water can flood. Then sewage can come up in the yard or back up into toilets and sinks. A failing drain field calls for septic system repair, and the right fix depends on why it failed.
Florida law says a person may not repair a septic system without first getting a permit approved by the state. In Palm Beach, Broward, Martin and St. Lucie Counties, each county's health department issues septic permits.
The state rule also names work that does not count as a repair. Pumping a tank with the drain field left alone is one, and replacing a broken lid is another. Swapping in like kind parts and minor structural fixes to a tank do not count either.
So the permit question depends on what the job is. The county health department answers it for your address, and we point you there.
