Stuart sits along the St. Lucie River, just west of the Indian River Lagoon. Much of the flat ground in and around town is poorly drained sand. USDA soil maps show its water table rising to about a foot below the surface. Martin County names soils saturated by high water tables as one cause of major septic problems.
Jojo Septic offers septic tank pumping in Stuart, and the city is part of our service area. When a tank or a field needs more than a pump out, that is septic tank repair work. We also clean and replace septic tank filters. Call or text (561) 239-5838, and we look at the job and put the quote in writing.

Stuart covers about 6.25 square miles and serves as the Martin County seat. In August 2011, the City Commission approved a sewer expansion for the city and its unincorporated utility service area. Low pressure sewer lines run along the streets. Each connected home gets its own grinder pump station.
The expansion runs by zone, and the city's list includes Riverview Manor, Pelican, Hibiscus, Dolphin and Snug. In 2023, the city brought back its sign-up incentive for owners who missed the earlier rounds. The city says septic to sewer conversions cut the nitrogen and phosphorus reaching nearby waterways. Its sewer page also says limited funds make it impossible to extend sewer into many areas for the foreseeable future.
So parts of the city still run on septic tanks, and those tanks need pumping on a schedule. State law sets a clock once sewer does arrive. After the utility's written notice that sewer is available, a working septic system has 365 days to connect.
The USDA soil survey maps much of the flat ground around Stuart as Waveland and Immokalee fine sands. Salerno sand and Nettles sand turn up too. All four are poorly drained, and their water table can rise to about a foot below the surface.
Other spots, such as the St. Lucie and Paola sands, are excessively drained. Water runs through that sand so fast that it filters little. The USDA rates every one of these soils very limited for septic drain fields.
Martin County says the most common reason for early septic failure is inadequate maintenance by homeowners. Pumping the tank on a schedule is a big part of that maintenance. A toilet that backs up is an emergency septic service call.
The Florida Department of Health in Martin County does the permitting and inspection for septic tanks. Its office is in Stuart. As of July 1, 2021, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection carries out the state's septic rules. State law requires a permit before anyone builds, repairs, modifies or abandons a septic system.
The state updated its water quality plan for the St. Lucie River and Estuary in 2025. The same environmental department maps where its nitrogen rules for new septic systems apply. Stuart falls inside that area. There, state law bars a new septic system where sewer is available.
Without sewer, a lot of one acre or less needs an enhanced nutrient-reducing system. Those rules shape any septic system installation in town. For any single lot, the county health department decides how they apply.
Building permits follow the city line. Inside the city limits, the City of Stuart's Building Division takes permit applications. In unincorporated Martin County, the county's Building Department handles permitting and inspections. We can point you to the right office before the work starts.
The 2020 Census counted 17,425 people in the city of Stuart. The three Stuart ZIP code areas held nearly 73,000. So most people with a Stuart address live outside the city limits.
Census survey estimates put the median year built for city housing at 1982. About half of the city's homes went up in the 1970s and 1980s. Detached houses make up about 28 percent. Most of the rest sit in buildings with two or more units.
Martin County runs its own septic to sewer program, called Connect to Protect. Smaller communities get a grinder station at each home, and larger ones get a vacuum sewer. On its Golden Gate redevelopment page, the county calls septic to sewer conversion a priority concern.
With a grinder station, the owner keeps up the pipe from the house to the grinder tank. A clog in that pipe can call for hydro jetting.
