Septic tank filter service takes care of the effluent filter at the outlet of your septic tank. Liquid passes through the filter on its way to the drain field. Solids stay behind in the tank. Under the state's approval standard, a filter must stop solids larger than about an eighth of an inch.
Jojo Septic cleans and replaces septic tank filters for homes across Palm Beach, Broward, Martin and St. Lucie Counties. Where a tank has no filter, we can add one. The solids a filter holds back stay in the tank until septic tank pumping and cleaning removes them. Call or text (561) 239-5838, and we look at the job and put the quote in writing.

A septic tank separates solids from the liquid. Sludge settles on the bottom and scum floats on top, the University of Florida extension service explains. The liquid in the middle flows out to the drain field. The effluent filter sits in that path and holds back solids that try to leave with it.
The EPA says effluent filters keep excess solids out of the drain field. That helps prevent blockages that can damage the field. Solids that get through can clog the field's pipes and back wastewater into the house, the extension service warns. A field that has already failed needs drain field repair.
Florida's septic rule calls for an approved outlet filter, the rule's name for an effluent filter. It goes in the last tank or compartment, or just past it, before the drain field. The rule also says the filter must be placed so it can be reached for routine maintenance.
The state's approval standard has each filter maker spell out how often its filter needs care. The EPA says most makers recommend cleaning every one to three years. Filters with smaller openings need cleaning more often, the EPA adds. A university extension guide says to check the effluent filter during a septic tank inspection.
When a filter plugs, liquid backs up and cannot leave the tank, the EPA says. Florida's septic owner's guide says a clogged or damaged filter can cause a system to fail. A failing system can back sewage up into the house or onto the yard, the same guide says.
What goes down the drains changes the timing too. The guide says to flush only human waste and toilet paper. Wipes, even ones sold as flushable, can clog the system. Keep cooking oil and grease out of the drains as well.
The median home in Lake Worth Beach was built in 1969, Census figures show. About three in four homes there went up before 1980. An older septic tank can have a plain outlet fitting and no filter at all.
The EPA says effluent filters can go into existing tanks as well as new ones. Florida's septic rule does not count adding an approved filter as a repair if the drain field is undisturbed. Permit questions for a specific home go to the county health department. For a Lake Worth Beach home, that is the Florida Department of Health in Palm Beach County.
We replace effluent filters that are cracked or broken. Florida's rule calls for an approved filter, and the state's environmental agency keeps a list of approved models. The rule ties a filter's size and installation to the maker's directions.
