Drain Field Repair in Lake Worth Beach, FL

Drain Field Repair · Lake Worth Beach, FL

Leach field repair for soggy yards and slow drains

Drain field repair fixes the part of a septic system that spreads water into the soil. When the field fails, the ground over it can turn soggy and smell like sewage. Drains in the house can slow down, then back up. Jojo Septic repairs drain fields in Lake Worth Beach and across Palm Beach, Broward, Martin and St. Lucie Counties.

We find out why the field failed, then repair or replace the lines and chambers. Sometimes the trouble sits in the tank instead, and septic tank repair is the fix. Either way, we look at the job and put the quote in writing before any work starts.

What are the signs of a failing drain field?

Some signs show up in the yard. The ground over the field stays wet and spongy, or water pools on top. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) also lists bright green, spongy grass over the field, even in dry weather. A sewage smell near the tank or the field is another sign.

Other signs show up inside. Tubs and sinks drain slowly, and the drains may gurgle. Sewage can back up into the toilets. Florida's septic rule counts house drains that stop emptying properly as a system failure.

The University of Florida extension service warns that a failed system can carry germs like E. coli into groundwater. If you see these signs, call or text (561) 239-5838.

What does leach field repair involve?

Florida law says no one may repair a septic system without a permit first. In Palm Beach, Broward, Martin and St. Lucie Counties, the county health department issues it. The application records the soil and the water table in the wettest season. It also names the field type, and the rule's examples include gravel and chambers.

Chamber systems are one kind of drain field we install and repair. The right fix depends on the cause. When roots clog a line, the rule accepts removing the roots and replacing the damaged parts. When a field fails from too much water, the rule can call for adding more field.

The old tank can stay if the county finds it sound and close to the size today's rule requires. Then the rule calls for septic tank pumping and an outlet device that holds back solids. Old gravel and soil from the failed field cannot go back in. The work is inspected before it is covered.

Drain field replacement and the South Florida water table

The soil under a drain field treats the water, and soaked soil does that poorly. Florida's repair rule never lets a field stay in the wet-season water table. If the field's bottom sits within 6 inches of it, the rule bars fixes like jetting the lines. The old field comes out, and a replacement goes in.

Federal soil maps show most of Lake Worth Beach on deep, fast-draining sand. Lower ground near Lake Osborne and the canals has wetter soils. Wellington and Port St. Lucie are wetter still. There, the maps put the high water table within about 20 inches of the surface in most spots.

Rain raises the water table too. The National Weather Service says most of South Florida's yearly rain falls from May 15 to October 15. On a low lot, a replacement field can be built up on fill to clear the water table. When there is no room to add field, the rule lets a new field go in the old one's spot.

FAQ

Drain Field Repair Questions, Answered

Common questions about drain field repair around Lake Worth Beach and the Palm Beach to St. Lucie area. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (561) 239-5838

How much does drain field repair cost?
The price turns on what failed and how much field has to be rebuilt. One root-clogged line is a smaller job than a full replacement with a new septic tank. Field size, the water table, fill and permit fees also shape the price. We look at the job first, then put the quote in writing.
What makes a drain field fail?
Too much water is one cause, from heavy rain or roof drains aimed at the field. Tree roots can grow into the lines, and cars parked on the field can damage them. Solids from a tank that is overdue for pumping can clog the field. EPA says a natural layer in the trenches of older fields can thicken and slow drainage.
Is the problem my drain field or my septic tank?
Slow drains and backups can come from either one. Soggy ground or a sewage smell over the field points toward the field. A septic inspection checks the tank and the field to find where the trouble starts. We quote the repair once the cause is clear.
What should I do while the drain field is flooded?
Use as little water as you can, since every flush and shower sends more water to the field. The University of Florida extension service advises against pumping the tank until floodwaters go down. A tank pumped while the field is flooded can float out of the ground. Keep cars off the field, then call or text (561) 239-5838.
How do I protect a drain field after a repair?
Keep cars and heavy equipment off it, since their weight packs the soil and can damage the pipes. Point roof drains and other runoff away from the field. EPA recommends grass and ground covers over the field, because tree and shrub roots can damage the lines. Florida's rule also says the field may not be covered with asphalt or concrete.
